I prefer Regency romances to Neanderthal romances, and any book whose first third features characters  waxing lyrical about foxhunting ad nauseam is always gonig to struggle to catch me.

DNF. I stopped reading after the end of Chapter 1. The story felt really convoluted. There were so many characters, and I couldn't understand how all of the characters knew each other.

Review - I preferred Jack Lester as a hero to Jason Montgomery. He was more willing to accept love and to fight for it, which is a more human reaction. The characters were more deep and interesting to read about than in the previous book. If it's possible I think I preferred A Lady of Expectations to the last one in the Lester series, The Reasons for Marriage. I felt that the description was also more complete. I think the constraints of the time were conducive to a more traditional courtship, but I like how the characters step outside those bounds, at the same time as remaining inside them enough to avoid a ruined reputation. It's very cleverly done.

Genre? - Romance / Erotica / Regency

Characters? - Jack Lester / Sophia Winterton / Gerald Lester / Horatio Webb / Lucilla / Clarissa

Setting? - England

Series? - Lester #2

Recommend? - Yes

Rating - 19/20

Regency romance, where Jack Lester decides he now needs to marry and decides on Sophie, without meeting her. He then pursues Sophie without letting on about his recent fortune. They both fall in love but Sophie believes she cannot marry him because he needs funds for his estate and she has some. That's about it.

It wasn't badly written but not a lot happened. The plot and conflict felt a little unnecessary and falls under my least favourite trope of miscommunication...or lack of communication.

I did not like this book as much as the first in the series. Jack was very proper and did all of the right things in his court of Sophie but it just fell flat. Sophie was in love with Jack. Jack was in love with Sophie. Sophie didn't want to marry Jack because she didn't have any money and she thought he needed to marry for money. Jack just came into a lot of money but didn't tell anyone so that the mother's wouldn't throw the daughters at him and he could make his own choice. Then, when he tried to tell Sophie she didn't believe him. It was all very bland. The best parts were when Jack was keeping Marston or whatever his name was away. He was insufferable and could not take a hint. Also, Jack with the young cousins, and with Ned was good. Ned and Clarissa were ridiculous, both in love with the other and neither willing to admit it. But the punch Ned gave the unscrupulous guard was good, and then the one Jack gave him later. There were good moments, but it just was kind of blah.

I agree with most of the other reviewers that the story lacks depth (e.g. it's one "I love him but..." point is repeated a lot). However, I enjoyed this because it was decidedly lacking in a lot of the contrivances I've come across with historical romance with the stereotypical stubborn woman who does something reckless. Instead, this is more a leisurely romp in the garden with a well behaved lady. A nice change! For that, I appreciate the subtly of the storyline.

It was good at the beginning but then it got really boring and dragging. I felt like it could've been better if it wasn't so wishy washy. In the end I just ended up being more interested in the love story of Sophie's cousin and ned instead

Don't know how I missed this series by Stephanie Laurens until now, but this is a charming reformed rake story that made my heart happy on a rainy spring evening.
