A good whodunit. This is a cute cozy mystery series. I love the 40s PIs in mystery books and movies.

I really enjoy this series. The cast of characters is great and Penelope is like a real person. Of course Jack Shepard is the star of the book! In this book, the Movie Town Theater is hosting its first Noir film festival. The festival include an appearance by a legendary femme fetale. And with her comes the mystery.

I did find
Spoilerthe romantic scenes between Pen and Jack disconcerting. I don't think it is healthy for Pen to be involved with a ghost in that way.
But maybe it will all be explained in a more logical way later. I can't wait to listen to the next installment!

Cosy. In a watching-the-bodies-pile-up kind of way. I definitely didn't figure out who dunnit.

Another great entry - I love the way the past and the present cases were intertwined.

2.5/5 - Least favorite in the series so far, probably because of the very "noir" feel of it. I think this one spent the most time in Jack's past so far, which is a 1920s annoying detective schtick complete with women being called "doll" left and right. I find the contemporary parts of the book more interesting, personally. I also agree with another reviewer who said it's most annoying that she doesn't just solve Jack's murder by looking at his files. She could do it at any point, really. And the lovey-dovey stuff is cringey.

Book #74 Read in 2013
The Ghost and the Femme Fatale by Alice Kimberly

This is the fourth book in a cozy mystery series. Penelope owns a book store and it seems to be a magnet for murder. Pen usually begins her own investigation, with help from her live-in ghost, former private investigator Jack Shepard. In this installment, there is a film noir festival going on in town and on the first night a near miss make Pen suspicious. The following morning, an author ends up dead in her bookstore and Pen is sure this was no accident. She begins her search for the culprit.

This series is a good cozy mystery series. I love the bookstore and small town setting. The cast of characters are a great batch, especially Pen, Jack, Pen's aunt Sadie and mailman and trivia whiz Seymour.
