MY HEART.

The book has me in a chokehold. Literally I felt like I could barely breathe at moments. The constant rage that Rafferty lives with broke my heart. He’s struggled so hard to protect his family but in the end it was still destroyed. He lays all of his hate and blame on the one closest to him, Posie.

Posie has to move back to Washington for school after 6 painful years away. She hasn’t been back since the worst night of her life. Back to her best friend, Paxton, who is struggling so much, and to the boy who took all of her firsts, his older brother, Raff. She’s trying to lay low but knows running into him is inevitable, still she was no where near prepared for the lengths he would go to.

“Your tears now mean more to me than you ever did.”

Raff is BRUTAL. At first, he can’t see anything past her betrayal and lies, but there’s so much that went down that night that he doesn’t know. But it’s not Posie’s secret to tell. She’s determined to give him what he needs because deep down she knows the boy she fell in love is still in there.

I was so invested in their story I could barely put this book down. They’re re both so broken. Posie’s sacrifice ripped my heart out. Once everything finally came to light I felt like I could finally breathe again!

This was an emotionally gripping story, dealing with the loss of both a romantic relationship, and friendships between childhood friends.
The reader has to ask themselves a question:
Which will cost you the most...the weight of your silence, or the aftermath of speaking out against abuse?

Rafferty and Posie are childhood sweethearts, who by a tragic string of events are separated by a promise Posie was forced to break, in order to protect the person they both love most in the world. Unfortunately for her, being a savior, also means becoming the villain.

Her decision costs the young couple 6 years of separation, and heartache. Years in which Rafferty allows the root of bitterness to take hold of his life, resulting in a final confrontation that proves that love heals, and forgiveness ultimately means freedom.

This was a beautiful story.
I absolutely loved Posie, as she is such a refreshing female main character.
I admired her strength and fortitude, and the patience she was able to maintain throughout every confrontation and test.
Rafferty is such an alpha character, but he also had such a depth of emotion. He may have initially been quick to anger, but his love for his brother, his loyalty to his friends, and his immediate inclination to apologize when wrong, endeared him to me.

*I look forward to seeing more of these characters,as well as their comrades, Rome and Lark in a future installment.

This was hands down one of the best books I got my hands on in 2022 and will for sure be a top read for many in 2023.

Kayleigh King put her heart and soul into writing this book and that becomes extremely clear with each page read. The angst, heartbreak, love and passion within these pages will having you turning pages and begging for more.

Rafferry and Posie love hard. Since the moment they each owned up to their feelings they were inseparable. When Posie makes a life changing decision everything they know crumbles to the ground leaving Rafferty to pick up the pieces and turn to nothing but hatred for Posie in the process, causing her to move on and away.

Flash forward to a few years later and Raff has used his wealth and power to bring Posie back within his control and has nothing on his mind but all the ways he can make her pay.

The plot is heavy, and side characters will have you begging for the next releases in the series. Butterflies and Vicious Lies will rip your heart out, and put it back together one page at a time.

Run. You need a little Raff in your life today.

4.5 Stars

What an emotional roller coaster of a ride this book was! I had not expected the story to take the twists and turns that it did but I am not disappointed. I have read all of Kayleigh's books, and they keep getting better! I am not a big contemporary reader but for specific authors, I make an exception.

Rafferty was such an unhinged and angry character. His past hurts and betrayal drove him to make some insane decisions in the entirety of this book lol. His past to present POVs were intense. He's one of the characters that remind you of how the air goes still before a tornado hits. You know danger is coming but you just can't get to safety quickly enough. Even though he is a badass there are moments of vulnerability in his POV and the way he acts with Posie. He was a very consistent and well-rounded character.

Posie also intrigued me. Even though she acts shy and demure she definitely has an edge to her. She is loyal to a fault and incredibly selfless. She will do whatever it takes to protect the ones she loves. Even with the wrath of Rafferty coming down on her in full force she never falters. I would say her love for Rafferty is the definition of unconditional.

If you are looking for a contemporary romance filled with twists and turns, spice, betrayals, second chance romance, unhinged morally gray MMC, and surprisingly fiery FMC this is the book for you. I am so excited I was able to read the ARC! Butterflies & Vicious Lies is out on Jan 13!
