Helpful. I don't really know how to review a teaching non-fiction book? I feel like I learned some stuff. So yay!

A lot of great suggestions for putting together a consistent training program. Only thing it is missing is more suggestions on reinforcements for dogs that aren't motivated by food or toys.

As far as sepanx books go this one isn’t awful, although the gold star still goes to DeMartini-Price’s. Two big problems and one little one. First: There’s an awful lot of space dedicated to aspects that aren’t actually separation related. Sleeping arrangements? Nutrition? Who cares. (Yes, start with the whole dog and move to the behavior problem but there’s six pages on it, when you need like, a paragraph. “Does the dog enjoy their food and have regular, well formed stools?”). Second: The actual protocol is light on details and even lighter on how owners are to create a randomized, progressive change in difficulty. Which is the key difficulty in treating separation anxiety.

The little one, which unaccountably bugged me more than anything else, is that she recommends Bach flower remedies–which are flower pedals ridiculously diluted in water and alcohol, and where the flowers are chosen because of their vibrations or some shit, it’s like one step sideways from homeopathy and has zero scientific backing. And she includes that in the section with Dog Appeasing Pheromone, which does have good backing. Yikes.
