A memoir about Laurie Lee going from the English countryside across Spain in 1934, making ends meet by playing his violin. Beautiful capturing the journey through the countryside to industrial London then across to Spain and the religiousness of the Spanish villages. The welcoming of a foreigner with charity. The tensions rise of the Spanish Civil war looms in the background and becomes ever more prominent.

Lee is such a fantastic writer and his account of travelling on foot through Spain in the 30s offers so much detail. However, like other reviewers I found his accounts of young girls so off-putting that I couldn't look beyond that.

  • Incredibly poetic, reads like poetry rather than prose
  • Fantastic vignettes of life from that time
  • It read a lot like fiction, even though it's non fiction- I know it's a true story but just the depth and extent of the storytelling was so gorgeous it feels like fiction

This was an interesting read. The atrocities the author encountered on his tramp through Spain were not related in a way as to produce “shock-value”. This I appreciated. The story retains a distance for the reader that enables them to appreciate the poetry embedded in the writing style. In all, it was delicious, like hearty soup with warm bread.

Wonderfully inspiring, daring and thought provoking!

Life certainly is an adventure and we are often blind to the treasures of daily routine, even though they remain our constant, comfortable companions for the long haul. We are surrounded by moments of joy...reach out and embrace them
