rereading this book has given me a lot. i’ve realized that when i first read this book i wasn’t getting it. and i wasn’t going to get it because i wasn’t reading it to get anything, y’know? and there’s so many details i let slip.
this is such a wonderful story. i root for charlie even now and like i’ve already said, it’s simple enough that i can still FEEL. i felt everything i had to and everything i didn’t want to but i mustered up the wits to allow it.
plus, i got some new information today about one of my friends that corresponds with a big part of the story. i might lend him this book. i really just don’t know how to feel. i want to cry. i just haven’t been in the mood to let it happen.

At first I thought he was writing diary entries, and addressing the book. I still don’t know who the letters were addressed to, or why he would include such personal content in a letter and send them to someone?

When I consider that I don’t believe my children had these type of experiences growing up, I have to admit that I really don’t know. The kind of freedom and debauchery and lack of parental supervision was exactly my experience and those of my peers in the 80’s. Literally nothing surprised me, and I can recall clearly the same type of parties etc.

Charlie is a little bit unbelievable in his love for others and courteous behavior. Teenaged boys are more careless and selfish and much less thoughtful in my experience. The bystander stuff seems real but he was much too good in his thoughts to be real.

I can’t rate it yet, I’m still thinking about it. The whole tone of the book had me sad and worried about Charlie. The end let me breathe. I need a follow up to see how he’s doing! But I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone. It’s graphic, triggering and as a YA fiction- it’s way too adult. Great for looking BACK though, for the right audience.
