Almost my favorite of the series. I do love a good ending.
And in retrospect, I found Nikys' brother really annoying in the two that came before. Realistic enough, but annoying. The supporting characters in this installment were much more fun, and I hope she picks them up again.

Another good one, this features a rescue of Nikys mother. She turns to Pen and he can't say no, so they have a clever scheme that could have worked but for a 2nd rescuer that makes an appearance. It was well done, I was able to share the story with my hubby since we use bosun chairs and rigging for everyday work. Very interesting approach to the rescue.
I liked Tanar, Borsha and Nikys mother and finally, at the end, Pen and Des and Nikys have a serious talk which gives us our HEA :)
Oh- and I loved how Pen would state simply that he was courting Nikys, as an explanation to others as well as to her. She had given him months of the cold shoulder but that didn't stop his honesty. I think that sealed the deal, good job Pen!

A tolerable short story of Pen-I find much of it very repetitive. It seems we have to hear the same explanations of events we have just lived with the characters over and over and over.
It reads more like fanfiction than an actual story, frankly, there is absolutely no character development that I can discern. There also does not seem to be much actual affection between Penric and his object of attraction .
Which one would think would be at the forefront of a love story. But there is none of that at all. It makes me wonder if the author has actually ever experienced the emotion of love and attachment.
It seems incredibly shallow and blocky, instead of the deft and artistic curves of her earlier writing. Not sure what happened, but it seems like her abilities have slid downhill, or she just simply chooses not to employ them.

Just really enjoying this series of novellas, this is the Gaudy Night of the Penric and Desdemona series (where Nikys makes up her mind). Comforting adventure with a quirky faintly damaged hero and a score of fascinating set pieces and fully realized minor characters, I especially loved Nikys's half brother and his rescue machine.
