I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. The opinions are entirely my own, and any quotes are taken from the ARC and may be different in the final published copy.
Only Ashes Remain by Rebecca Schaeffer is the second novel in her Market of Monsters series. To give a fair review, I read the first book, Not Even Bones. I will review the first book, but this review concerns only Only Ashes Remain.
After Nita escaped and destroyed the black market, she just wants to be left alone. When a video of her abilities appears on the dark web, she knows she must go on the offensive. With the help of Kovit, Nita starts to take revenge on the person who sold her to her kidnappers. With everyone searching for her, Nita needs to do whatever it takes to stay alive and free.
Even though I enjoyed the first book, I discovered I needed a break before reading the second. Once I did begin reading this, I found I enjoyed this more than the first book. This book could be read as a stand-alone novel, but reading the first book would enhance this one.
This story is darker than the first, but it is a fun read since the writing makes you feel for all of the characters, including Kovit.
A third novel, When Villains Rise, was published in 2020.
This 200-word review will be published on Philomathinphila.com.

4 fucking stars. This is what I call a good paranormal fantasy-urban book.
I cannot express how much I loved it, I think I finished it in 6 hours or less. This was amazing, gained years of life with it. There is so much I want to talk about but at the same time, I like to keep my reviews neutrally spolier free.
First, I was absolutely delighted with the light shown in racism and xenophobia, when it came to the humans against other humans and legends (you can see I really like this nickname) against humans. Coming from the other end of the world I was never so aware as I am nowadays of what harm do other countries do to POC and the fact that in a book completely out of talk of humans ways was such a great gesture.
Second, the dark and sarcastic humour in this book is so so so fucking hilarious that sometimes I was wheezing. The Canada jokes, murder basement, discrimination and mental illness was 10/10. THE messages between Fabricio and Nita had me rolling on the floor. Aesthetically pleasing to my no noise laugh.
Third, the characters are going to make me want to put them on a pedestal. They are all fucked up, don't get me wrong but it was so comforting seeing them interact with each other even though their own prejudice. Diana has an amazing character arc, Adair is giving me queer icon vibes and diplomatic ones (he seems like a libra to me), Kovit is so fucking sweet sometimes and just need to understand and love and therapy, Nita is having mental breakdowns every second because of trauma, not knowing how to deal with her feelings, too much revenge even for my sadistic ass and a little too much ´i don't wanna listen just kill´ and... I want to punch Gold in the face. no cap.
Fourth, the talk about morality, good and bad, rules for killing people, discrimination system and stigmas was so well down. Adair has one of the most amazing speeches, as well as Diane.
Fifth, I'm a person who enjoys a good plot and a romance on the second ground but I have never felt so in tune with a couple like Nita and Kovit. They are fucked up people, that still do fucked up things to each other, for each other and others, come with a baggage of emotional trauma and childhood problems and still, they cant communicate better than Netflix couples. That TALK in chapter 46 made me put them in my top 10 couples, it was so real. Apologies were made, promises and truths were said in ways that don't justify their actions but give reasons as to why. I am replying to that scene in my mind since yesterday.
Sixth, how many times do I have to relieve my motherly issues? JUST STOP. I was having my psychologist on speed dial in the middle of the book. She even wears the same hairstyle, I want to do. (this means it was an amazing character portrait of a mother who isn't... well motherly).
Ps: throwing the Argentina-Chile drama was so funny that even my father laughed (coming from an Argentinian herself).
