After absolutely loving the first book in the series, I went into Cursed Crowns with pretty high expectations. And while the plot still had a lot of fun, I have to admit I was a little disappointed after finishing this second book.
The world is still magical and full of action, and I really enjoyed the direction the story took overall. There were exciting twists and political drama, and the pacing kept things moving. I never felt bored, which is a good thing. The introduction of new characters, new kingdoms were very interesting. But what made it hard for me to fully enjoy the book was the characters. I lost count of how many times they ignored someone’s advice, did the exact opposite, and then regretted it. It got frustrating after a while because it felt like they weren’t learning from their mistakes. Though, I tend to forget just how young these characters are as well so I guess it can be obvious when reading young adult books as an adult.
I also didn’t feel the same connection to the characters that I had in the first book. Something about their personalities felt off, like they were making drama just to move the plot along. It kind of took me out of the story at times. That said, there were still a few moments that reminded me why I loved this series to begin with. Especially when the stakes were high or when we got to see deeper into the world’s magic and lore.
Even with the ups and downs, I’m still interested in where the story goes next. I gave the ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 because while it didn’t quite live up to the first book for me, it still had enough going on to keep me curious. I’ll probably pick up the next one, maybe not right away though ><

3.5, sadly! I LOVED the first book, but this one was just all over the place for me. There was almost no conflict; everything would be cleared up by the next chapter. I wanted more suspense and less predictability. Still enjoyed being with all the characters again- especially Tor, my beloved Tor!!

I can’t believe I waited so long to read this book. They did it again with this story. I can’t wait to continue to read what is next. I absolutely need more!
A slow start, but again good fun to read.
Both Rose and Wren had some much needed character growth, and it was nice to see the stories of a few of the side characters develop as well. I still found the primary antagonists to be one-sided, irredeemably evil baddies, but this was rounded out by everyone else being morally grey.
Overall, I enjoyed myself again and will finish the series, although I fear I’ve picked the loser in this brewing love triangle.

I do still love the twin aspect of this and how much sense the dual viewpoint makes because of it
Rose with Shen and Wren with Tor 👌🏻 (sorry Alarik, I see were people are coming from now)
felt a bit slow to get into as I feel like most fantasies do, but in the end stuff went down
always kind of hate that second books in a trilogy still end in chaos, but I think it was a good 'happy for now' ending while already having built up the conflict for the final book
