⭐️5/5 Stars⭐️

This is a book that hit every mark—premise, execution, characters, relationships, language…every aspect of it blew me away. It was suspenseful, emotionally engaging, and tense from beginning to end. The commentary on typecasting and expectations, passion, and trauma was all very enlightening in an eerie sort of way. Overall, this was a book that I thoroughly loved every part of and is definitely something that I will be making my entire personality.
The ending devastated me (I made a playlist, laid down, and cried). The ambiguity of it all…I choose to believe that James is alive, but that doesn’t change the fact that I am heartbroken.
The entirety of this book had very encapsulating, dark academia vibes. The constant quoting of Shakespeare majorly contributed to this for sure, as it was like the characters had their own little sub-culture and way of communicating (which they did, in many ways).
This reminds me of Dead Poets Society and Vicious by V.E. Schwab (two of my favorites, so it’s no surprise that this book is as well).

We always say how we travel into the books we read, yet none have made it feel as real as "If We Were Villains" did.

I sat down on the bed with the book in a Soviet time house with horrible, flower-covered wallpaper, and once I opened it I ended up in a dark room at the conservatory with Shakespeare being quoted by the characters sitting by the fire.

The book kept me guessing what was going to happen throughout it, once I had a solid guess I immediately doubted it.

The characters are actors, you can't trust a thing they say, which made it just so much more interesting.

Without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read.

When a discovery is made I re read a certain part and it all made sense. It’s also the lost I’ve ever annotated

Dit boek leest echt heel vlot and I had a damn good time reading, maar de reveals waren zo voorspelbaar dat ik twijfel of ik het wel reveals moet noemen. So... Goed boek, maar zwakke mysterie.
