A palate cleanser between heavier books, Blue Lightening details the back story of Jimmy Perez. For those who are familiar only with the TV show, Shetland, the series of books by Ann Cleeves take place about 10-15 years earlier
Once again, a five star--till the last 10 pages. GAH!
Still bawling. Never saw that coming. The slow build then the breaking mystery that can’t be put down always hooks me. Didn’t see the twist coming. Shocked is an understatement. And the ending...think I’ll just go cry myself to sleep. 4.5 stars
Wow.
It's not often that I find a thriller that I haven't at least partially solved before the big reveal, but Cleeves manages to surprise me with every installment.
Detective Perez is back, this time wading through the escalating tension on his home turf of Fair Isle to solve a shocking murder on the eve of his engagement celebration. Cleeves weaves a mystery around the growing tension between suspects, between Perez and Fran, and with their desires for their uncertain future. The ending was breath takingly shocking and makes me glad I can go get the next installment immediately.

This is book 4 in Ann Cleeves Shetland series and I have to say at this point I'm firmly hooked and invested. So invested that this book stunned me. It wasn't the ending I expected at all.
When I first started the series, I was worried that I might find it a bit boring because I'd seen the entire TV series (the first season is based on 4 of the first 5 books in the series). I was so wrong. The plots don't always work out as they did on the show and the writing evokes time and place and character so well that this may be one of the only book series turned into a movie or tv show where I have been equally entertained by both (usually I prefer the books). They are equally entertaining and you feel like the characters are the same in both but the stories, while somewhat similar, are very different. In the best way possible. I feel like I've gotten a double dose of Shetland, which is just fine with me.

A good mystery set in the Shetland Islands. The author does a wonderful job of describing the moody setting of an isolated island during a storm. The characters are very well developed and interesting.
A woman is murdered on a remote island and it just happens that a cop from the main island is there visiting his parents with his fiancee. A storm prevents him getting help for several days so he has to deal with everything on his own. Another murder occurs, the weather clears and help arrives. The story involves a group of birders as suspects and deals with the fiancee meeting the future in-laws.
Really enjoyed the book.
