4.75 Another super book in the series. I think the best but darkest one. The series is really wonderful. So much atmosphere, deeply developed characters and plots and excellent mysteries that really keep you guessing. I love both the series and the books.

(4.5) Wow, this one has quite an ending. It explains something about the show adaptation that I had been wondering about since starting the books. I can also see how this was originally meant to be a quartet since this installment brings it full circle in some ways, but I am of course glad the series continues on from here!

I liked the setting of Jimmy's childhood home of Fair Isle and the time we get with his parents and Fran, though the birdwatchers were annoying AF :-)

I am enjoying these Shetland mysteries. The pace is pretty relaxed and Cleeves draws believable characters.

Great in the usual Ann Cleeves style of greatness. Having come to the TV series first, I keep tripping over Jimmy Perez's dark hair and eyes :) but the mystery unfolds as a mystery should, with hints for the reader and mis-direction throughout. I kind of knew to expect a tragedy at the end and my dread of that outcome shadowed my reading, but still recommend this to anyone who loves the Shetland series!

I've enjoyed all the previous books but didn't care for this one.

Oof that ending. I wasn't expecting it and it seemed too abrupt.

This one explained a number of things that never got explained in the TV series - or if it was, I missed it. Good mystery, well-written, and now I REALLY want to visit the Shetland islands.

Wow! What an ending. I didn't see that coming. I did sense something bad was about to happen to Fran, but I did assume the danger would pass and she would be alright. When I read how Fowler struck again and again, I began to have my doubts. Chapter 38 began with, "Wherever she'd been, Fran would have died." I had to read that sentence several times to grasp that Fran was actually dead. For me, Ann Cleeves has created such believable characters that I have become totally wrapped up in them. I really enjoy life in the Shetlands - despite the murders - and it's a shock that Fran is gone now.

I knew I would finish the book today, so when I passed the library this evening, I found and checked out the next in the series. I am so relieved the library had it available. Now that I finished this book and this chapter of Jimmy Perez' life, I need to read the next book in the series at once! I have other books due at the library soon, but I don't care. I need to see what happens to Jimmy Perez after this! Thank you, Ann Cleeves, for drawing me hook, line, and sinker into your tales!

I dislike that Cleeves decided to let F. die. It feels random and unfair. The Fair Isle setting was interesting, I also liked the focus on bird watching. I just really hated the ending of this book even though the case was alright, again, the ending was rushed.

very big twist at the end
