Straordinario romanzo storico.

While this is a novel it very much reads like a description of a documentary. It’s meticulously researched, the short chapters are ended with period quotes and brief documents to give added historical weight to the novel.

Aside from the very first pages I didn’t love the writing itself (read in translation of course) but it is serviceable.

The book tells the story of Mussolini and the founding of fascism from 1919-24 with multiple pov characters, Mussolini and his mistress among them. I’m going to find a biography to pin down the history a bit better and cross my fingers that the other three books get a translation soon.

Stopping this one at 200 pages. It’s an interesting and very…. in-depth historical work. I feel my ignorance of detailed Italian history has made this book work to read. I just couldn’t get connected with the 770 page commitment. It’s a imaginative and wholly conceivable piece of historical fiction, but too big of a bland bite to chew. No finish = no rating.
