The book is a very cliche action novel. I think there are better titles in the genre
There's a lot of hype around this series lately due to the recent release of the Amazon tv series starring Chris Pratt.
I enjoyed the story, but didn't think it was particularly well-written. The characters were one-dimensional and there weren't many surprises. The author's experience as a SEAL does provide him the knowledge and experience to provide additional detail on tactics and gear that other thriller authors don't. It's a simple revenge story, where the hero easily defeats the bad guys and never really feels at risk of being caught or killed.
This was the author's first book, so the writing quality probably improves as the series progresses.

Fresh off of The Gray Man, I was wanting more thrillers. I kept hearing about this series from several people and how intense and brutal it was. They were right.
James Reece is a man with nothing left to live for or lose. No matter how brutal he is throughout the book to those that have wronged him, you understand why and it's hard not to empathize with him.
I look forward to seeing what kind of trouble he could possibly get into after the ending, as the door is wide open and the possibilities are endless.

2.5 stars rounded to 3! I don't think this book was for me and I think that can make or break the thriller reading experience.
I enjoyed the premise of the story and the shoot em up action scenes. These scenes helped move the story along and also helped me finish the book.
The issues I had with this book are numerous. Although alternating the point of views in a story to get the "bad guys" perspectives is a solid writing technique and can add to a thrill, I found that it made the book far too predictable. Due to the POV shift, readers know most of the traps and attacks that will be made on the main character beforehand, making this read very predictable. For me, this technique dampens the thrill experience and really knocked down the enjoyability of this book for me.
I also understand that Carr was trying to create a fast paced novel, but it didn't work for me because I found myself really not caring a lot about Reese until the end of the story. I had almost no buy in for Reese and his character conflicts.
