Audiobook narrator was great, some of he military strategy lost me but the audiobook made that easier to follow. Lingering questions about a couple of characters, curious what happens in the rest of the series!
I am very clearly not the intended audience for this book and, in fact, I only read it because I was challenged to read a book recommended by a friend with a very different taste in books to my own. This was certainly that.
To start, here's what I liked: the pacing was gripping and the narrative voice was distinct.
Here's what I didn't like: the protagonist's pregnant wife and three year old daughter are fridged near the beginning of the book, as though "the orchestrated murder of his entire team" wasn't enough of a motivation for the protagonist set out on a quest. The worth of every character is directly tied to their physical fitness. Every character is drenched in stereotype and cliche, so none of the characters are interesting. The protagonist's memories of his wife and daughter indicate that the author has either never met a toddler or has only known extremely precocious toddlers. The violence was gratuitous and there was nothing creative about the protagonist's motivation or problem solving. There was also nothing creative about the writing itself. A lot of the ideas promoted by the book felt very...potentially harmful and overly simplistic.
Anyway, I think I'd only recommend this book if you are, like, a white guy libertarian.

Hmm, there was a lot of stuff in this. I don't think it was for me.
I like a good action thriller and I don't mind military-style ones that go heavy on the guns, but I'm SO tired of revenge thrillers where a dude's wife (and/or children) is murdered nearly right away. Another reviewer noted that it's hard to sympathize with the main character because he's barely shown grieving on the page, and I have to agree with that. This was a lot of "Reece did this, and then he did this," and nothing internal.
I don’t normally read books like this, but I was trying to broaden my genres. I can now say that military fiction or you want to call this is not for me. I saw that this was a show on Amazon with Chris Pratt so I wanted to give it a try. I thought I would enjoy it more because I like movies that are this style but reading the details about guns and tactical missions and killing is not that fun. I know exactly who would enjoy this book and that would be someone who calls themselves a Patriot. They would love this! I had no expectations or ideas what the story was about before I started, so in that sense, I was entertained because I didn’t know it was gonna happen.
Too Many Diatribes
Decent book, but the author goes into way too many diatribes, using too many stereotypes. We get it: you don’t like certain kinds of people or concepts. Don’t force me to read through all of your personal crap at the expense of what could have been a really good book.

Super racist/sexist/book version of Fox News. Didn’t finish.
I'm not completely a military action fan, but these books are all very good. I love the characters.
I've read all of these and will read the future editions.
