This book is just incredible. Can't believe I didn't know the actress, but damn, she's so fascinating. It's like getting into the mind of someone who's been pushed to the margins, and man does she tell her story like a boss.

And what's even better? It's inclusive towards the trans community and stresses the importance of keeping tabs on our mental health. Plus, she delivers it all with her wicked sense of humor. I mean, seriously, this book is amazing.

I think this would have been closer to five stars if I had read it all in one sitting which I realise isn't the book's fault so this is probably unfair. I've never watched Chewing Gum but I didn't think that took away from the lecture at all. Some genuinely great and interesting ideas and it really makes me want to watch the show

I picked this book up from a used bookstore on a whim, and I'm glad I did! I didn't realize this was adapted from a speech she gave but I loved Michaela Coel's voice and will definitely read more by her.

Misfits by Michaela Coel

5 Stars

This book is an extended version of a lecture that Coel gave to members of the film production industry. It’s brilliant of course, and one doesn’t need to have any knowledge of the industry (I don’t) to enjoy Coel’s excellent writing abilities. If you are a fan of her TV shows Chewing Gum and I May Destroy You, set aside an hour or two for this short book. I hope one day that Coel writes a full-length memoir.
