Contained some interesting ideas with a anti-colonial perspective of a small state trying to resist slowly becoming absorbed. Also interesting Sapphic relationship and a fun magical twist that helped the main character realise her value. The Vietnamese inspired setting had just enough detail to feel real and I would be interested in reading more from this world.

On twitter one person wrote (and I copy) that "in Vietnamese culture, lil'sis/em is a standard pronoun for a woman who's younger than you and whom you're familiar with. It doesn't mean you see her as a blood sister."

My mistake was that I previously took that relationship as incestuous. Still, my rating doesn't change.

I'm going to be honest... I really thought this was a Five-stars read... but something ...maybe in the way that is written difficult me read the story... when I was in page 30 after more or less a moth since I start the book I found myself frustrated because : yes I was full for college but u thought that I would end this book in a week or 2 weeks but one month later I ended the story.

I found myself wanted to scream to Thanh, to say to her that all the decision she made or that others makes her made was wrong, the her lover (her colonizer)  do not see her like a same person but as a barbarian as a less person.

I can see why everybody loved this book, myself (my story , ect) can relate to Thanh, i loved her, i wanted the best for her but maybe the author needed more pages to explore the profundities in all the relationships... maybe if we could see more deep in the story would be a Five star story for me ...

I only finished this because it was so short. I loved the setting and felt like this would have been better as a novel. The protagonist made unbelievably poor choices, all of the characters were disappointingly flat,  and the plot just kind of ended because the author needed it to end. The romance ending was a bit creepy too. I would not recommend this book.

I think it's safe to say I really enjoy de Bodard's writing.
This was glorious, I wish there was more.

Princess Thanh is trying to reconcile what she wants as the youngest royal child in a small country being pressured by a larger one. She has a strained relationship with her mother, a past romance with one of the royal foreigners, and a strange connection with a girl made of fire. Short and good, this blends interpersonal and political drama as Thanh figures out what she wants and whom she loves.
