Do you ever just go along into a book amd suddenly you're 30 pages from the end but youd rather die than finish it. Yeah... I mean the actual ending was pretty good but that was uh Something

This was the one where the pacing fell apart and everything felt off. I still don’t believe her math is right on certain things. Was warned about the rape scene that appears and it is just as affecting as promised. I could go on but needless to say, a real disappointment.

A very uneven final entry in this trilogy that spends a whole lot of time with a rushed, forced relationship for readers to invest in, only to then ask "you think *that* was rushed?" and proceeds to speedrun a final confrontation with an adversary that comes out of nowhere with very little payoff. Pretty disappointing considering the strong start, but this final entry feels mismanaged from start to finish.

Thank goodness Lackey allows Vanyel a couple of moments of happiness in this last book in The Last Herald-mage trilogy. A couple of moments before whacking everything apart, that is, then going into some pretty dark places, making Vanyel's youthful horrible visions of a dark mage a reality.
Again, the character writing is sensitive, and sad as the ending is, there is a tiny bit of hope there, too. And Yfandes is the best.
