A great YA read that centers on a Cambodian girl's attempts to immigrate to the US and into the local Oregon culture. It was one of the first actually modern books that I read for highschool, and refreshing due to that.

A great young-adult read about a Cambodian girl's attempts to adapt to an Oregon high school after fleeing unspeakable circumstances in her home country. This is the first book I read in school that was written after I was born, so it felt fresher and real than other books I had read up to that time. (7)

Sundara is a Khmer girl who escapes from Cambodia with some relatives with nothing but the clothes on her back and her life. Burden by guilt over a tragedy she was unable to prevent, she must find her way in America, where everything is different. 3.5 stars

Overall I quite enjoyed this book. The writing was perhaps a bit simplistic but themes were quite complex. I really enjoyed the perspective gained on issues of refugees coming to America.

I read this when I was somewhere around 13, it was one that made me think. I remember small details from it all the time still.
