The Sentinel

Lee Child, Andrew Child

3.59 AVERAGE

Once again, Jack Reacher reins over all--calmly and cooly. He takes on Nazis and Russians in this thriller.

First read: My curiosity of wondering 'what is a Reacher novel written by Lee and Andrew Child going to look like'? has been put to rest. The writing doesn’t feel too different and if I didn’t know that his brother was co-authoring the book, I probably would’ve been none the wiser. However, the book does feel tonally different but the only thing I can put my finger on is that Reacher is more talkative than usual. In some ways this felt like classic Reacher but despite being on the shorter side for a Reacher book, it still felt drawn out. Reacher novels centred around technological plots are very hit or miss for me and this is in the latter camp. It wasn’t a high-stakes plot but there were some little nuggets of background information on Reacher. The Reacher books are very formulaic and that’s fine for me but I would like a higher stakes book thrown in every now and then. That said, I have a feeling that if this had just been written by Lee, it probably would’ve been about 100 pages longer, so there’s that I guess 😂

Best one yet

I like the combo of the brothers writing together. A good cast of characters and, as usual, the best kind of literary bubblegum.

I just did a read of all the Jack Reacher books prior to this one and loved most of them, but this one? It feels like someone knew who Reacher was, knew things about him and wrote a book. It was just off. Everything with the character was off. Reacher is not a chatterbox, but in this one he was. The way he fought, the threats, the way he talked, everything was just not right. Not Reacher. But almost. I will probably give the next one a try and see if it is any better, but if not I guess that will be it for Reacher for me. I can always re-read the older ones

Two stars is generous. This is not the Reacher we have come to love. Halfway through I tried to think of him as a totally different character and the story was still weak. It had too many convoluted subplots, unbelievable series of events, and no strong characters. I may be prejudiced, but I don't remember so much time spent on the details of what people wear, how they walk, etc. I only finished it because I bought it. I'm sad that the Reacher franchise was not allow to end in true Reacher style.

Best Reacher book since Gone Tomorrow in my opinion. Quick pace, enough action, Jack being Jack. I have gotten used to quick endings to thrillers and lack of falling action in a plot still bothers me, but I no longer remove stars for this. I have come to understand this is how books are written in the 2020s so I have to accept it and move on, or quit reading books.

Good Reacher book. You know what you get.

It’s just more of the same with each and every Jack Reacher, and that’s just fine. It scratches the right itch for me.
