The Sentinel wasn’t like the classic Reachers like The Persuader, Tripwire, or Bad Luck & Trouble. But it wasn’t as awful as I feared with Lee’s brother Andrew taking over. Yes, Reacher speaks more but he’s done so in the past, depending on the book. And, yes, he tends to get focused down on the particulars of combat but I kind of appreciated the more descriptive play-by-play of every blow. Or, at the very least, it wasn’t as distracting as other critics have made it out to be.
As for the plot, this one turned out to be more mystery than pure thriller but the Reacher series has always slid along that spectrum so no points deducted there. I like the whole ruse of it being Russians, then Germans, and then back to Russians as the bad guys because it made the plot interesting. It was kind of fun not knowing if this was more spies infiltrating this country or if it was just regular neo-Nazis in our backyard. Lastly, I like the supporting cast of characters. It’s always better when Reacher has a menagerie of characters supporting as opposed to one confidante who then has to be his back-up, his Federal/law enforcement connection for information, and often his romantic interest/booty call as well. Here the plot was served by having hackers, ex-FBI agents, current FBI agents, and local LEO’s assisting him.
All in all, this was a proper and impressive debut from Andrew Child taking over the franchise and I look forward to next year’s installment.

The Sentinel provides many hallmarks of a typical Reacher story including great action scenes and investigative deductions. The main thing keeping this book from being a 4 star is the writing. Choppy. Incomplete sentences. Like this. Annoying.
