It took me forever to read this book because it was so boring! Even the soft porn it is chock full of is boring!

A beautiful novel, one of my favorites. It's a sad and moving retelling of a Japanese folktale (so I am told, at least--I haven't read it). A love story and a meditiation on relationships and the nature of truth and mercy. Love it.

This book was a beautiful fairy tale in the classic Japanese style. It deals with beautiful topics like the soul, types of love, animals, marriage, family, fate, and so many more things wrapped in a magical package that shifts with the story from fox to woman, sometimes losing the distinction between the two. Almost borders on a Cinderella-esque following as well which is a plus.

Downside to this book is sometimes it got rather slow.

This was a book I received at a book club event (thanks Beth!).

This was an interesting one - I liked the writing a lot and didn't find it as slow in the beginning as most other reviewers seemed to. I think that's mostly because I've read many books like this before so I was a little more used to the style. This had an original plot and took place during a time period I don't read much about. Our three main characters are also all very distinct and have their own problems - no one is perfect and I was rooting for different people during different parts of the book which was a nice change of pace from "this is the protagonist, root for them."

This book did drag a bit or was just a little too dark at parts where I would need to put it down for a bit. There was also more sex than I was expecting (and it was a bit more graphic too) and some of it was a little uncomfortable to read.

A slow-moving and fascinating book that takes a long time to build into something coherent and interesting, but ultimately beautiful, moving, insightful and wise.

This is another of my absolute favorites. I'd like to shake Kij Johnson's hand for writing such a believable, pitiable, fierce and feral heroine.

Another great book by this author. I think it would have been a five star read if I hadn't read the short story 'Fox Magic' - as this is basically a longer and more in depth version. I believe it is based on a traditional Japanese myth. The themes of humanity and love were written into the story very well. I really enjoy Kij Johnson's writing. It is quite slow moving at times but I really enjoy her writing so it was never too much of an issue for me. I highly recommend this.
