CW: death, mental illness, blood, mention of alcoholism, mention of forced institutionalization, murder

I randomly found this on my audiobook app, it was short and I needed something to listen to on my walks so I started it without knowing much other than it's by Adrian Tchaikovsky, whose sci-fi books I absolutely adore. That being said, I was a little underwhelmed with this book but it was alright.

My favorite aspect of the story (to no one's surprise) definitely was how meta it all was. The Underhill books exist and they're basically Narnia 2.0 but Narnia also exists and apparently, Harry's grandma and C. S. Lewis also knew each other so who plagiarized whom here? (I also have my problems with the Narnia books so it was fun so read these parts talking about the similarities but also satirizing it in a way.) Another very interesting discussion was the opinions on purpose and "being made for something" and not being able to fulfill that purpose that came up towards the end of the book.

To sum it all up: the story was fine but nothing special, the main character was alright and I neither liked him nor significantly disliked him and the most compelling thing about the story for me was that it was a story about stories, a book about books and therefore touched on the question of what's real and what's fantasy. And I'm a sucker for that.
