The Song of the First Blade by T.C. Edge

Sadly I'm moving this book to the DNF pile because I'm not enjoying it anymore. There is little to no character development. Elyon i.e. one of our main character suddenly transforms from a spoiled little brat to a matured good son within a single chapter and his brother who was the good and obedient son transforms into a love sick fool within the same chapter. It just took one night to change both of them! The brother's love interest just keeps smirking at Elyon whenever he is around which was so comical for me. She didn't have any personality other than being the most beautiful. I did like Jonik the assassin but the plot is too predictable and too slow paced for me. The magic system is good and I really loved the prologue but after that it was just a slog to go through. If this story had been edited and reduced down to 400 or 450 pages then it would have been a great read. Too much inner monologue and lengthy descriptions of landscapes made it too boring.

Never read any of TC Edge before but now I will rectify this. Superb story, character arcs and writing. Fantasy fans will enjoy.

I really liked this. I wanted to read some more self published worked after finishing Wheel of Time and this was a great one to start with. It has all the things I like. Interesting main and side characters, a large expansive world, political maneuvering, and some solid action. My only minor gripes is that the characters talk weird sometimes. Like it’s not always consistent and sometimes modern phrases or words will be said randomly but it didn’t take away from the story or anything which I thoroughly enjoyed start to finish. Book Two will be read in August!

Good world-building, an okay magic system, and reasonably realistic. I just wasn't engaged by the characters. I had the sense that it was building to something but I ran out of energy.
