This was a short but shockingly profound read for me. It follows 30 yr old Millie as she navigated the mundanity and depression that comes from the everyday woes of her life. At times this could have felt self indulgent and lacking in self awareness but the author was able to capture the humanity that we can all relate to from these moments. Genuinely, there were sentences I read that encapsulated thoughts I’ve had that I didn’t think anyone else has experienced and have never been able to put into words myself. Is it a ground breaking story that’s never been told before, no. But the writing and the main character are so deeply, boringly, misguidedly human that you can’t help but relate and feel pulled in.
3 stars comes from the fact that I’m not sure I really enjoyed reading it, the main character is pretty sad and self sabotaging, but again, the relatability and writing style kept me reading. Each character, no matter how briefly they were mentioned, felt as quirky and flawed as a real person. Would definitely be interested to read more work by Halle Butler.

Many of the things in this book were relatable. Feeling anxious, alone, gross, depressed, unheard, unpretty, or any combination of Millie’s inner voice is no news for a millennial trying to thrive in an economy or a society like the one we currently are in. However, I felt disappointed because this is all too obvious. There’s no spin, no satire, not even a deep comment on this problem. The whole book felt as if someone gathered a bunch of testimonials from crappy periods in their friend’s lives and made a book out of it.
I kept reading because I liked Butler’s voice (and Millie) and kept waiting for something else, but didn’t happen.
