I received an ARC thanks to Goodreads First Reads.
I really want to say I loved The New Me. I want to say the jokes were effervescent and I will look back on this longingly wishing I could read it again.
I can’t say any of those things.
The protagonist was awful. Millie, inspired the same amount of hatred in me that I’m currently feeling for Holden Canfield. She has the same superiority about her and the same apathy.
I could tell where the biting social criticism was and how it was supposed to be funny, but it wasn’t.

Hmm.. had to take some time to think about this one. I’ve come to the conclusion that it felt underdeveloped. Sure the fig tree analogy trope is one relevant to a large audience but Millie GIVE ME SOMETHING.
a shit watered down version of my year of rest and relaxation. i didn’t pick up on the satire expressed in some of the good reads reviews. i hoped this would be a quick and easy read due to its length but was dull, which reflects the monotonous and dry life of the protagonist. nonetheless I feel like the text led nowhere and achieved very little - the structure, changing perspectives from first to third person, added nothing to the text and actually dragged me away from the focus on the protagonist.

too despairing to read for too long. and the ending, that passing mention of how “her actions from here on out would carry more permanence” leads then in the next turn the further loss of interiority. which. i guess i can understand. spending 150+ pages sitting with a narrator brimming with a malcontent life is exhausting but it was anticlimactic. hits a little too close to home. if i wanted something so banal i would just. not try to find a rich inner life like the main character, i guess.
