It had its moments, but it was fairly depressing.  The protagonist is hard to get behind.

girl this was both depressing and comforting at the same time. the last line about fridays and the weekend made me gag!

Scarily similar to my journal at some points

This made me feel very uncomfortable, with Halle Butler bringing out my own fears so I could have the joy of both experiencing and reading them. Sickening.

I open up my email, see that I have three unread messages, and go through the normal emotional fanfare, thinking in rapid flashes something like “you’re going to prison” or “you’re going to die” or “everyone hates you.”

You can’t ask someone to help you without letting them know you’re different than advertised, that you’ve been thinking and feeling strange things this whole time. That you’re uglier, weaker, more annoying, more basic, less interesting than promised.

That being said, this didn’t hit quite right for me. Usually I love books that are all vibes, no plot but aside from Millie’s parents there is not one likeable character that could lend itself to a more real world experience. I understand this is from Millie’s point of view, but Sarah is a really shitty friend and no one in her life (again, excluding the parents) is good for her at all.

At least with Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel, My Year of Rest and Relaxation, even though the MC is entitled, self obsessed and selfish, she still manages to paint her not-so-good friend Reva in a way that I actually liked her. This made the whole thing feel more human for me and in turn it opened me up to feel empathy towards the main character.

It makes it difficult to enjoy the vibes because the vibes are literally only bad.

The exception and real highlight is Chapter 25. The comfort and warmth that unravels through her visit back home, made me feel like Millie’s mum was wrapping her arm around my waist. I wish Millie had a version Chapter 25 written down for herself, so she could reread it every time she felt despondent or worried.
