Style was very interesting. I’d like to read more Solomon that’s from a different project. Was unaware of the tie ins with music etc prior to reading.

I wish this book was longer so the author could have spent more time telling us about the world. I would have LOVED a better look into this unique world. While I understand the book was about Yetu and her journey, I felt like the world she lives in is unclear to me. Ironically, or maybe intentionally, her world feels unclear to me. I just wish we could have built on this special concept so much more.

STOP. THIS BOOK IS INCREDIBLE 😭

Intersex merfolk who are descendants of pregnant African slaves women? A clever and compelling story about individuality and community, and history's significance towards the people in the present? A story that highlights intergenerational trauma and its impact? A story that highlights the need to discover personal identity while still wanting to connect with your people's history? This book is ALL of these, and it's also so much more.

Brilliantly written, this book is steeped with folklore and world-building and introspective themes. The perspectives, which can switch from the MC to an ancestor, highlight amazing storytelling from the author.

Overall, this was poignant and it was powerful. Definitely one of my top reads for the year. 🥹

The Deep was hauntingly beautiful. It felt very poetic at times. Very connective to real world, beyond being inspired by historical tragedy. We all carry the past with us, ours and/or our families, but you can’t let it consume you.

I’m still not sure how I felt about the romance(ish). I can see how it helped Yetu, but the time she spent beached gave a different feeling than the time leading up and after. If that makes any sense.
