I was going to rate this 4.5, but I can't remember what I disliked about it, and I have not stopped thinking about this book since I read it, so 5 stars.
This book follows the historian as she holds all her people's memories to preserve her people's happiness, thus leaving her conflicted about her identity. This concept sounded amazing when I first heard about it, and the author really did such a good job with the follow through. The chapter which told the people's history left me speechless and stunned, I am awed by this book even though it's so short. 
Also every character is black and the main character is a lesbian (or sapphic), so please read.

I loved it. Loved the writing, the setting, the atmosphere, the world building, the story, the emotions, the queerness. And was impressed how the real history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the resulting intergenerational trauma was processed. It's such a short but impactful story. Wow.

This is a difficult yet important story based on the concept of pregnant Enslaved People being discarded into the oceans by enslavers and their offspring living on below the waves. 

This story covers the concept of personal growth, independant sacrifice for group benefit, strengthening community, and 
generational healing. 

The potential for more stories within this universe (as clipping./Daveed Diggs says at the end of the audiobook) is strong, and the only reason it's not a 4.5/5 is because I don't see myself going back to it multiple times. I really appreciate Rivers' writing style and will be seeking out other works of theirs.
