Wow I whipped through this- can’t believe it took me so long to pick up. I loved both halves of this- both Frankie’s time in Vietnam and her struggles returning to civilian life in California. I saw someone else comment that they had a hard time reading about her experiences with ptsd but isn’t that exactly the point? It was hard and frustrating to read especially when everyone was constantly invalidating her experiences (wanting to forget, “there were no women in Vietnam”). I’ll come back to this one again what an incredible and eye opening story.

Thoroughly, THOROUGHLY enjoyed this. I got through it in 24 hours and was unable to put it down. I finished this whilst on the train and was crying publicly. It’s a graphic description of war, with a protagonist that I deeply routed for. I wasn’t expecting half the book to be about her life upon returning, and honestly this was just as devastating to read as the war passages. It is heavy, and relentlessly sad which is hard to read. Despite all this, the importance of sisterhood persists throughout. Such hugely likeable, 3D characters. Best book I’ve read in a while. Her work is just so eminently readable whilst making you consider the relationships around you and educating you about corners of history.
