A police procedural in an alternate steampunk Cairo with an excellent female lead or three. Some pacing issues but different enough to be a ton of fun.

This story was a little bizarre and thus took a few chapters to really get into. But once I did, it was an easy ready. I wanted to know what happened next but not to the point where I was flying through the book.  I did like how immersed in the culture it seemed to be but it made things a little clunky and the books was not as accessible as it could have been. The last 20% of the booked dragged on so long however and just got more and more absurd.  The writing also got really simple, as though the author wrote the end first and then the beginning, maturing as a writer in between.  At some points the absurdity was funny but at others it just made the book hard to finish. However, the characters were fleshed out and the world building was done so well that it was still an enjoyable and satisfying read.

Such a fresh and intriguing read! Have loved finding Clark and REALLY enjoyed several other short stories. (If you have not yet read Ring Shout... you just HAVE to!) Saying that, this world, these characters, and his creativity... have led to this awesome full-length continuation. Eagerly awaiting what comes next from his marvelous mind :)
The world is enthralling, the characters uniquely fun, and story entertaining. Ready for more.

The book was good, but the climax meandered and there was SO MUCH standing around just watching things happen.

The premise of this sounded right up my alley but I think for me this would be a better book to read in a physical format rather than an audiobook format, I struggled with the narrator a lot.
