3.5 stars. enjoyed this one. a good mystery (though kind of easy to guess) with likable and humorous characters!

This one had all the right ingredients to be a banger but I just didn’t feel the feelings

A strong start, I really liked it until the last quarter of the book. The writing style felt different and usually I like a didactic undertone in fantasy books, but it wasn't subtle at all. It was more tell than show unfortunately. Also, I don't like a deus ex machina ending :(

A deliciously fun book. Great characters, interesting flaws, deep world building. I especially liked the audiobook narrator; it's nice to have non-white characters with an Arabic accent rather than the standard British accent that seems to be used in narration of all brown/dark skinned characters in fantasy books.

Great book really, but I hate mysteries and didn't realize how much of a mystery this would be

This was perfect in every way. Fatma’s suits, the wonderfully nuanced characters, the elaborate setting, the mentions of food that will make you ravenous, the villainous White colonialists you love to hate. I smiled the whole time I read and can’t wait to revisit it.
