The book opens with the secret brotherhood of Al-Jahiz being supernaturally wiped out including their Grand Master, Lord Alistair Worthington. Agent Fatma , a seasoned determined investigator, is called on to investigate the murders aided by Siti, her exotic girlfriend and Hadia, her rookie partner.
Set in a wonderfully lived-in steampunk Cairo in the early 20th century, the world-building in this novel is nothing short of extraordinary. There are many fantastic creatures like djinns, ifrits and even a German goblin along with a diverse and compelling cast of humans. The pacing is good.
If there is any criticism to be made, it would be that at times the story's complexity can feel overwhelming. Also the humor might not be to every reader’s taste.

I definitely see where people had issues with this one, a lot of character development and backstory take place in the prequel novellas, However, I've read some of them so I had a lot of fun with this one! Clark is a master at worldbuilding and I'll be adding him to my list of must-read authors.
