Review: The Silo Series (Wool, Shift, and Dust)
✨:  5/5
Genre: dystopia
1️⃣ emoji: 🛕
Format: audiobook

Catastrophe overtook the earth hundreds of years ago, and now all that’s left of humanity is living in an underground silo, a self-sustainable bunker created by unknown predecessors. The world outside is a desert with poisonous air, and even saying out loud “I want to go outside” is treason punishable by death. The story starts with the sheriff of the silo digging into his wife’s research before she abandoned the silo. Is the world outside really as dangerous as everyone says? Or is it all a conspiracy to keep them trapped in the silo?

➕: Was very hard to put down!! I love a good dystopia, and this one has all the elements of one. Overall thoroughly enjoyed the entire series. It also is a series that premiered last year on Apple TV.

➖: The second book is almost more of a prequel- digs into how the silo was built. This initially was a bit of a let down because the first book ended on a semi-cliffhanger that I was eager to get back to. I wouldn’t change it now, because the prequel parts gave so much more context that was important in the third book.
I also felt like I could have used even one more book- I wanted to keep seeing where their adventure went!

A triumph. Now usually I am not such a big fan of dystopia, I find it too depressing, but this filled me with hope about humanity in general.

I don't want to spoil it in anyway so I'll just say I thought the world building was excellent and the characters rounded and full of depth. The reason it isn't 5 stars was I felt Howey was rushing towards the climax of this first book. The book was a slow burner with lots of intricate layers to it but that is lost a little with a race for action in the second half. However, it wasn't spoiled and I am excited to read the next instalment.

I enjoyed the premise, narrative style, and world-building of this book. Can't wait to read the next one.

While this is super short, it was a very intriguing read. It just hints at things within this world that really made me think.
