Tive várias vezes a sensação, ao ler este livro, de que estava a ler um relato distópico de uma sociedade em rutura inventada, mas depois lembrava-me da crise da Venezuela em 2013, de ter ouvido falar das prateleiras vazias nos supermercados e da queda da moeda nacional e das milícias e do surgimento de grupos armados de resistência, e ficava profundamente angustiada. É um livro duro, esta história, extremamente bem escrita, de uma mulher que faz o que pode para sobreviver.

I didn't enjoy reading this book, but I don't think that's really the point. I found it helpful to understand the trauma urged on a society which descends into lawlessness, corruption, and violence. Definately worth the time to read it, and I feel bad not rating it higher. Just not my favourite type of literature.

As a Venezuelan I was expecting more. It felt very raw and disturbing which I was not ready for. I also didn’t like the writing style
Heartbreaking. I really felt Adelaida's terror and loss. On one hand, I can't imagine living in a place like this. On the other hand, when she was describing how her society had become such a disaster, fueled by greed, it isn't hard to imagine something like that happening in the US.
Um óptimo exemplo de viagens temporais para mostrar como algo se pode transformar num piscar de olhos. E o pior é que se baseia em factos reais. Lê-se num instante e é bem chocante.

I expected a story about a hero. This one is about someone who is tired and walks away. Did I like it any less? No. Because would I have made different choices than the protagonist in the same circumstances? Who knows? Although the writing didn't blow me away, I perpetually thought, "would I have done this?". I love books that make me question my morality and judgments in situations I never faced and never imagined facing.
I highly recommend this book. It is a slap in the face.
