i had high hopes for this book, because i really loved [b:A Dog's Purpose|7723542|A Dog's Purpose|W. Bruce Cameron|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1315596959s/7723542.jpg|10479953]. this is a worthy second effort at continuing the whole dogs take care of people thread, but it isn't as strong as the first effort.

this one focuses on clarity, or CJ, and life with her negligent mother, gloria. the dog(s) that look after her: buddy, molly, max and toby. and while CJ loves her dogs, i just didn't love her as a character. i wanted to feel more of the bond with CJ and her dogs, but this fell short.

i'm glad i read it, because i love dog stories, but this is overshadowed by the book that preceeded it.

While still an excellent book, this much anticipated (by me!) follow-up lacked the magic of the first novel, which had me both laughing and crying quite hysterically. Still, a must-read for any dog lover.

“You can usually tell that a man is good if he has a dog who loves him.”

Dog lovers rejoice! We have another very special novel on our hands. And by special, I am of course referring to the wonderful sentimentality and humour with which Cameron tells the story -- from the dog's perspective.

The novel starts soon after we last met Buddy in Cameron's A Dog's Purpose: with Buddy missing his recently deceased person, Ethan. He is certain that he has finally, after many reincarnations in the previous novel, fulfilled his purpose as a dog; he loved, comforted, and protected his boy until the very end. Surely, this time, when it's his time to go, he will finally be able to leave the world and pass on to the next.

*Spoiler* Obviously, this isn't the case. And the novel takes us on a journey (a dog's journey?) to learn what this, and every dog's, real purpose is.

I find it amazing how Cameron tells a story so richly from the dog's perspective. His dogs have so much personality and character that you definitely fall in love page after page.

I recommend this book strongly for any dog lover. But first, you have to read A Dog's Purpose. It really helps to know the whole history of this wonderful dog's many lives. Both will make you laugh, bring you tears, and leave you reaching for your own furry friend to snuggle afterwards. I believe the first words out of my mouth when I closed the book were: "When can we get a dog?"

SO. MANY. FEELINGS
MY GOD, I just read a masterpiece.
Everything about this book was truly amazing. The characters, the settings, the descriptions, the plot, the writing!
It made me tear up a little bit but also laugh out loud many times. It's EXCELLENT and I would read it over and over again.

I could not have read a more perfect book right now. It warmed my heart and made me cry all at once. But most of all, it gave me hope. Cameron sure knows how to tell a story, breaking it down into its simplest, most meaningful pieces through the eyes of the most wonderful dog. I can't help but revisit memories of my own pets and wonder.
