It was a really good book and I really enjoyed it. I kind of predicted the ending to be honest but also it was kind of different. This is why it’s 4 stars.

I love how there is a diverse arrangement of characters. I loved there is a non binary character and their whole existence is based around being non binary. They have other bits to their character. The book also has mental health representation.

Stay Another Day is shelved in the YA section at my library but I think it is probably more New Adult - older YA at least. I don’t want to giveaway plots spoilers so I’ll just say that the McAllister family Christmas gathering gets very complicated very quickly. I loved its diverse representation with gay, bisexual and non-binary characters. There was racial diversity too. I’d be remiss not to give a trigger warning for disordered eating but the character concerned does make positive progress by the end of the book. While most of the story unfolds from the alternating perspectives of the three siblings (a teenager and twenty-something year old twins) there are a few sections told from the perspective of the family house. I appreciated these for their point of difference and variety but felt they were especially effective at the beginning and end of the book. This story has messy but loveable characters and a definite feel-good factor without being trite, clichéd or overly sentimental.

i liked how the time period that the book played out over was such a short period- it felt as if i was uncovering truths at the same time as the characters, live. the inclusion of all different personalities and beliefs is reflective of many families nowadays too!

This books strikes an excellent balance between humour and seriousness; confronting some heavy themes of eating disorders and queer-phobia whilst still being an easy and humourous read. The TV-drama worthy plot was softened by the real, complicated, and lovable characters; the whole thing cumulating in a fought for and well-deserved happy ending.
