family trauma lore set against a socio-political backdrop always goes straight to the ‘something-very-dear’ shelf in my heart

not sure what to tag it as. It took me so long to read this. it’s not one of my favorites but it’s certainly one of the most influential.

have just completed my reading of the expert storyteller, Arundathi Roy’s seminal book - The God of Small things. Having not read many or any of disjointed non-linear books, I wanted to give up on this book a few times because I couldn’t get a hang of the story. I completed 50% of the story but still didn’t feel a connect, however the author’s rich prose, beautifully woven sentences were evident from the start and kept me going. At about 70% of the book, I got pulled into the story and the sentences transformed into visual storytelling, I felt like I was present in Kerala along with the characters. One of the author’s sentences ‘History comes live’ carried so much depth in meaning. Subjects of love, loss, casteism, untouchability, injustice, and a few important historical events are superbly interwoven in this book. It definitely tested my patience, but the last quarter of the book gifted me with an immersive visual experience, completely worth my time and patience to get to that point in the book.
