'The God of Small Things' is the sad history of an Indian Christian family in a small village in Kerala, Southwest India. Roy's story is deeply tragic, her characters are bound by fate like players in ancient Greek tragedies, and the interplay of their conflicting characters lead irreversibly to the book's dramatic climax.

However, the author doesn't tell her tale chronologically, but goes back and forth in time, sometimes within a few sentences, slowly circling around the main dramatic event, and cautiously unfolding its multiple aspects, causes and consequences. She does so in the most beautiful sentences, drenched with sharply observed details. Roy paints sceneries, smells, characters, emotions; never with too many words, but very often with sentences one wants to read over and over again. 'The God of Small Things' is, indeed, a masterpiece.

It’s really painfully slow, a lot of the time i skimmed through.
Some of it i loved, some of it i loathe.
I really love the last part tho.
It’s so slow it’s hard to read it again once you put it down, but once you start reading you can’t put it down in a way BUT it’s so slow i can’t keep up lol that doesn’t make any sense i know.

I finished The God of Small things yesterday and unfortunatly it was a 2 star read for me. I didn't hate it, but the pacing felt slow to me and the timeline was all over the place.
Not unhappy I read it, but a bit bummed I couldn't love it like so many others did
