I really wanted to love this book and parts of it I did. The prose is beautiful. My difficulty, and its probably cultural, was connecting to the characters. More by the end, but it was challenging for me getting there.

This was a tough book to finish but it was so uniquely written that I am not even going to complain about the reading slump that it put me in. Hilarious and devastating at the same time. The emotions I felt for this book are going to stick by me for a long time. Like mango hairs in the molar.

I read some of it and I discussed it enough to know I just don't mesh with South Asian literature....

There is no doubt in my mind that Arundhati Roy is an enormously talented writer; she has a gift for language, especially picking the right words to describe the things and qualities that feel ineffable otherwise. That being said, I wasn't terribly fond of the novel's structure. The novel is generally told in chronological reverse and constantly refers to past events, that we can infer she will address in detail later. I wish it had been more subtle in that sense. Another thing that bothered me from time to time, was her verbose style. Even though the prose is beautiful and poetic, the lyrical style sometimes seems to get carried away with itself and hinder the progression of a great story.
I very much enjoyed the story, though I found myself thinking that the dramatic events could have had that much more impact had she chosen to tell the story in slightly different chronological order.

A jumpy fast paced book that you’ll need to read multiple times to understand.
