I had started this book a long time ago (more than a decade perhaps) but didn't click. I couldn't just get pass the beginning.

This time, I felt like I was ready for this and it surely was a great read. I loved the style, the language and the amazingly microscopic details - mostly of the childhood. This was beautiful and also super painful at times to relate.

A must read, and definitely a bestseller for a reason.

Hard to get into at first until you get comfortable with the flowery childish descriptions, excited and bubbly. The free association/stream of consciousness story-telling is like a character itself. At first blush, it is a little confusing. It's not the most beautifully written text, but how Roy introduces and handles the concepts of defiance of social classes, the loss of innocence, beauty and suffering is engaging. For all the talk about this book pertaining to the Love Laws in India, the book doesn't really give you any insight into the history of it. Despite that, it is an engaging story that can drown yourself in and the rustic nature of each character grows on you as you connect with the hypocrisy they experience in this political and structured world. Great book for a book club to discuss.
