Here's how it goes in my imagination. The author writes a novel on a series of many index cards, stacking them as she goes. But there are some left over! So she fills them with references to spit, pus, blood, vomit, pee, poop, sweat and ejaculatory fluid, adding those to the stack...but it was too much...the stack falls over and the cards are scattered in random order. Oh well, scoop that shit up and type it up cause she's tired of this story.
That is probably not how this book was written. I am probably too literal to 'get it.'

This book was so powerful and moving, interweaving so much of humanity and so much pain. Slowly unfurling the aspects of the tragedies that have bound up this family before it all comes crashing down, the reader feels the pain so keenly through the characters.
There can be no doubt that pain and suffering are unfairly divided amongst people, both in the book and outside of it, and we can see through the writing how that can carry through someone’s life.
The characters themselves, particularly the twins and their mother are so perfectly captured, their loving but fraught relationship, the childish fears surrounding love and the unity that ties them together, no matter what.
I felt this book was a beautiful, haunting read, with its sharp focus on all the unglorious parts of humanity that the reader can never escape

This book talks about a family and a major tragic event which unfolds into many more tragic events. Every single character has a back story and you see how the events in their lives have led to the present some characters are so lovable, and some are despicable, but still human despite their faults.
This story touches on some extremely heavy topics, but in a way that feels real and not overly “torcher-porn-y”, these characters and their joy, pain, love, and hatred feel so real.
Starting off can be difficult due to the non-linear chronology of the plot, but everything gradually falls into place until the very end where everything is clear.

I didn’t connect with the characters. Quite bleak.
I wanted to like this more than I did - the language is beautiful, for one thing. But it never really seemed to gel, and the characters never seemed properly fleshed out. So for me, it was too much style and too little substance. It was also unbearably sad.

“Do you know what happens when you hurt people? When you hurt people, they began to love you less. That’s what careless words do. They make people love you a little less.”
This was a beautifully written book about a family who experiences change, loss, separation and revenge. As we follow the multi-generational family in India. We see all the members lives unfold. The story was entertaining albeit confusing to keep up with characters they were talking about at times and the ending ruined the entire book for me. I don’t think anything makes an excuse for what happened between the siblings.
