Graphic: Sexual assault, Police brutality
The writing was very creative and often beautiful, but the story didn't necessitate it. I don't know how to explain it, but I guess the writing was superfluous. The story could have been told in 30 pages.
I couldn’t get in the right mood to read it.

A beautiful, non-linear story of young twins in India amidst cultural revolution and ghastly prejudice. Like many of my favorite authors, Roy crafts clever neologisms, primarily compound words uttered by chastising Indian mothers and grandmothers in this case. Though the plot centers on unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death of a cousin, the background stories of other characters are fascinating, particularly that of Baby Kochamma. Highly recommended.
This was truly incredible. A haunting read. I will be thinking about this one for a bit.

This is more a 3.5, the prose is undeniable rich, I can almost smell and see the sights that Roy portrays. Yet there feels to be a lacking after the childhood. Perhaps that's the intention yet it leaves them feeling ungrounded and drifting after their childhood and in my opinion hard to locate and imagine them as well, people. However the story is wrapped up beautifully and I recommend it highly.
