honestly enjoyed this much more than i expected. at its core, it’s a tragic love story, with a family saga, which is truly my favorite kind of book. i loved how the relationship with ammu and velutha is described. quiet, lyrical, interior. will be purchasing for my personal library.

Beautiful book and very surprising I didn't read this earlier. I love novels about multi-generational family drama. Family really does make for the best and worst tales of all time.
The writing was beautiful and all the little metaphors and words on wings and inside jokes that were established throughout the book and followed through to the end were wonderful. If I would only read the last 15 pages of the book without knowledge of anything else, half of it would be incomprehensible due to the many allusions and callbacks to things that happened before.
I also loved the non linear story telling. It kept me on my toes at all times and I found myself making up theories of what might have happened and then throwing them out immediately again 2 pages later. Starting witht the end of the story and gradually telling us how we got there, was a great way to go about this story and really added so many emotions to this story.

If plots are like rivers, this one has lots of eddies and no current.
Wat een aangrijpende, prachtige roman! Je moet er soms wat moeite voor doen, maar de beloning mag er zijn. Het raakt aan veel thema's: kastensysteem in India, familiegeheimen, tweeling (broer en zus) die op jonge leeftijd worden opgezadeld met een trauma voor de rest van hun leven, de rol van politiek, met als centrale gebeurtenis een door sociale ketenen verboden liefdesgeschiedenis, een familie met complexe verhoudingen met een verderfelijke "mater" familias als oudste lid.
Een roman waarin elke zin ertoe doet, elk woord, elke handeling betekenis heeft, prachtig gecomponeerd. Het geeft een goed beeld van de sfeer van destijds. Kortom: indrukwekkend!
