Kept waiting for it to get more engaging / interesting, had some bright moments but ultimately just wasn’t for me. Prose is very unique and a lot of metaphors but I didn’t like it. Should’ve quit reading partway through.

This book is beautifully written, with vivid descriptions that bring the story to life as it weaves together different lives across decades. I listened to the audiobook, and the narration added an extra layer of emotion that made the experience even more powerful.
The voices of the children were really well recreated, and the whole plot is just devastating but beautifully human. I really enjoyed it in the end. However, I can’t give it five stars because, as others have pointed out, at the beginning it is confusing, and you have to get used to the temporal jumps. Also, some of the descriptions felt overly detailed and, at times, a bit too much for me.

I'd probably go 3.5 if that were an option, but I didn't "really like it," so I rolled it down instead of up. I liked the book; I think I might have liked it better had I not just recently read Abraham Verghese's Covenant of Water. I did struggle with the narrative structure. The author says in an interview that she can see the logic of it, but I really can't. All the way through I had to stop paying attention to narrative long enough to figure out where we were supposed to be in time.
SpoilerAnd I don't see why we had to the the incestuous incident at the end. I can't figure what it adds to the story.
