Some of the language is a little dated, given that it was published over 20 years ago, but it's still a fascinating and informative read!

This was different than I thought it was. So Mary, separates each chapter into something than can or used to happen to bodies. From Cremation and Embalming to body farms and compost, there are many ways that people have developed to respect the dead. This taught me so much (most of it gross) about ways you can give back when you die. Between donating your body to science, getting composted into plant fertilizer, or becoming crab food, science continues to develop ways of studying death. It was very informative and well organized. On the flip side I would say that the narration was kinda slow and a little too relaxing. Other than totally grossing me out, this was a funny and informative book about what happens after you die.

I read Bonk earlier and decided to read this work by the same author, and I was not disappointed. I finished this book about a month ago, and I still think around once a week about something I learned it it. I really enjoy books like this that are not just educational but also change the way I think about something. It was also very witty. This book is for the terribly squeamish, however--some parts were a hard read. My only complaint is that it's not terribly current, so some information is outdated. I would love to read an updated version of the book.

Incredibly solemn yet surprisingly hilarious. I don’t read a lot of nonfiction, but Roach did a wonderful job of balancing the sad and gory with reflection and fun. I’m glad I already don’t eat meat, because there’s no way I would after the many many comparisons between cadavers and lunch.

I would be interested to see an updated edition with how practices have changed in the last 21 years. Super informative and I'm looking forward to reading her other books.

This was an interesting read! I listened as an audiobook which was fine for the most part but having someone tell you about mellified man directly into your ears is a little jarring. It’s now a little old so if you regularly consume mortuary content (a la Ask a Mortician/Caitlin Doughty) a fair amount will be familiar, but it’s still very informative and the tone is pretty funny, so overall a good read.
