“Love Island meets Lord of the Flies” was an apt description, and I absolutely loved it. There are a lot of layers here: the voyeurism of reality TV, late stage capitalism and consumerism, jealousy and vanity, individualism vs. community. Narrator Lily was sometimes not terribly likable, but she was fascinating—her insecurities, her strategy on the show, and her desperation to escape a life she views as small made her super interesting to me. Tom was deeply disturbing, and the moments where the author made me feel sympathy for him instantly gave me the creeps. All the characters felt like mini caricatures of different societal ills. The ending was unsatisfying, but I think that was on purpose. It appears divisive from scanning other reviews, but it’s a full-throated 5 stars for me. This book is unsettling and strange and smart, and I’ll be thinking about it for a while.
