I'm really glad to have read a physical copy while listening to the audiobook because this is a very long book that I could see myself lose interest in after a while. The narrator was fantastic in pronouncing the Spanish words that I was reading. He also brought the characters to life for me. The author does a good job making you feel hopefully and supportive of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. You know in the beginning one is "mad from reading all the books on knights and chivalry" and the other isn't smart enough to know things aren't true as they're being told, but you still want them to succeed in their endeavors no matter how misguided. I'll definitely listen again to this book.
You could take any page of this novel and make a movie from it. It's that good.
Ta da! I did it! I finished this book! Hard to believe. I found it much different than I expected. More coarse in some ways. And much more focused on Quixote's madness than I had been lead to understand from what I recall from seeing The Man of La Mancha all those years ago. It was interesting to see where some standards of literature (Lathario, for instance). The version I used was translated by John Ormsby. Which lead to a little confusion here and there. But nothing Google couldn't help with. Would I recommend it? Probably not, but if you are interested in reading what is considered one of the most influential novels of all time, then I can heartily recommend it. If you are looking for a a quick medieval read, maybe not so much. Though I hear that Edith Grossman's new translation is much easier to read. In any respect, I, am proud of myself! ;-)
I would recommend Don Quixote to anyone who enjoys clever writing and witty banter and place Miguel de Cervantes as the original among all who I personally consider great — Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Joseph Heller, and Kurt Vonnegut.
