Interesting but repetitive; read about a quarter of it and feel like i got the message adequately.

I almost felt like I would never come out on the other side of this. I enjoyed this, but I would also STRONGLY recommend reading the abridged version. There was quite a bit of repetition, but the humor, word play, and snark (Oh Sancho Panza you are a Mood) are very entertaining. I was humming Brian Stokes Mitchell’s solos from the Broadway show as I recognized scenes from the musical, but unlike the Broadway rendition, Sancho has my heart. The sarcasm, snark, and just general attitude of NGAF was what kept me laughing. I knocked another classic off my list for 2020!

I usually enjoy classics, but I just couldn't get into this one. I do have to admit some of the short stories hidden in the plot-line are wonderful, but it was hard to get through.

As painful as it is to give 2 stars to such a renowned piece of literature, unfortunately, it did not match my expectations. This is more of a collection of short stories than a consolidated (1000 page) book, but that's not even the problem, the problem is that the short stories, even though tied together between the same 2 covers, rarely have a connection between each other and generally seem to have been written just for the funsies, and dont seem to have any value besides the cool proverb here and there. In addition the story just doesnt seem to progress in any meaningful way, and although at times funny, (in my opinion) doesnt have much intellectual value . And don't get me started on the characters, they virtually dont change at all up until the end where don quixote dies and suddenly he realizes he was mad. And maybe that is the author critiquing chivalric books (since that's what this book is supposed to be about I guess?), but he really doesn't do much to stray from the thing he is satirizing.
And lastly, excuse my modern brainrotted brain

The proze can be funny and interesting from time to time, but this book is waaaaaay too long for its own good.

Finished book 1.

It's hard to write about a book that is so many things. Witty and satirical even 400 years later. Cervantes manages to make me love Don Quixote and Sancho more than I thought I ever would. Reading this will suddenly reveal to you just how deeply ingrained in modern stories is this story. This story can make one laugh and cry and wish they had the bravery to be mad

Been working on this book since August-ish, 2023. Good, just long, and some sloggy parts in the middle. Pretty hilarious all around, though, and meta-sections pretty interesting for a contemporary of Shakespeare (though WS also pretty meta at times).
