This book had me puzzled. At the beginning, I had no idea if I want to read on. Read it or leave it? Love it or hate it? I did enjoy the language and the writing style, but the total lack of plausibility in some of the described situations and characters was really getting on my nerves. The girl wins 18 million dollars and decides not to take it? Out of superstition? Hello? I would understand if she had anxiety problems or depression or whatever else that surely can affect your judgement. But her decision did not agree either with her character or her other actions. Then when it came to her most weird family relations, especially her parents, I really wanted to shout just like Stanislavsky: "I don't belive it! It's false! False!". Dramatic situations, both realistic and not at all, I've read about in plenty of books. This one did not leave anything but a distaste in my mouth. Only a saint could behave like Lily did. I know what it is to be shy, sad, dependent and stuck in unhealthy relations, but no one could eat all the contempt and disrespect from the nearest and dearest ones without choking on it at least once. By some miracle Lily didn't protest, except maybe at the end of the book.

However, despite the holes in the plot, I did enjoy the book a lot. The suspense was there, the romance was there, some interesting thoughts and characters as well. And I absolutely loved the way the book was structured into chapters, each with a nice matching title made to interest you in further reading :)

Despite this being Paullina Simons’ sixth book,I cannot begin to fathom how this book got published; it doesn’t seem to reflect tbe work of someone who has been published several times in the past.

This book was weird. Not terrible, but rather depressing. Also, I personally found the main character very irritating, as she refused to face anything and everything happening in her life.

2 stars because I managed to finish it! I loved "The Bronze Horseman" but this book was ... Wow. So much turmoil in Lily's life!

Win lotto? Check
Best friend go missing? Check
Get Cancer? Check
Questionable parentage? Check
Crazy siblings? Check
Extremely good at art, selling paintings for thousands? Check

Come on! Portions of the book were hazy and all over the show. Was disappointed by this book!

ALSO - who would win 18 million in lotto and then not cash it in? WHO?! Nobody, that's who!

I really enjoyed this book and didn't feel it was that slow to start. It was an easy read- only taking me about a day. I love Paullina Simon's style of writing. I'm always gripped. I would highly recommend this book!

Absolutely adored this book. I felt like it finished way too soon though. Lily was such an interesting character and I felt for her so much with everything she went through. Spencer was a difficult character but I grew to love him (I especially loved when he shaved his hair and hers I thought that was especially sweet) and her family felt so real. Her grandmother while a little erratic made me cry when she came out of her house for Lily to take her to the hospital. That was just beautiful. Her mother was so self absorbed Andover father was just ignorant. Her sister Anne so desperately only cared about her money. There were so many things about this book that just made it real and beautiful. I'm definitely a lover of Simons writings.
